About
Calvert Research was formed to bridge the development and financial gap in the early-stage drug development cycle between lead optimization and clinical proof of concept.
Working closely with universities and young biopharmaceutical companies looking to advance their portfolio, we acquire funding and assign resources to progress programs through the non-clinical stages of development, creating financial value.

We have developed a strong working relationship with over 150 technology transfer offices in the United States. From these institutions, we evaluate very early-state technologies and compounds that have the potential to become important therapeutic agents. We have screened hundreds of potential drug and biological candidates and have placed several truly exciting opportunities into development at Calvert Labs, our GLP toxicology and pharmacology laboratory.
Our goal is to provide a source point for promising new technologies that can be further developed by larger pharmaceutical companies.
We are currently seeking new potential drug candidates in the following areas:
- Oncology
- Ophthalmology (e.g., AMD, diabetic retinopathy)
- Metabolic (e.g., diabetes, obesity)
- Dermatology (e.g., wound healing, scar reduction, rosacea)
- Pain
- Anti-bacterials (e.g., multi-drug resistant bacterial infections)
In order to progress preclinical compounds to the clinic for subsequent licensing to the pharmaceutical industry, we manage the programs internally, utilizing a virtual consortium of highly skilled strategic partners to progress the programs to the clinic. These partnering companies provide services such as:
- Medicinal Chemistry, Lead Optimization
- Analytical & Bioanalytical Services
- Preclinical Testing Services (e.g., Toxicology, Pharmacology, ADME, PK)
- Manufacturing and Scale-Up
- Formulation Development and Stability Testing
- Regulatory consulting
- Clinical Trial Management
Founded in 2003, Calvert Research is headquartered in Cary, North Carolina and is privately held by Calvert Holdings, LLC.
